IMCA Icon Award 

The prestigious IMCA Icon Award recognizes a marketer or communicator who has demonstrated extraordinary leadership and exemplary achievement in the insurance industry. It recognizes the person whose strategy, energy and strong performance provides an inspiring example of how marketing and communications can advance an insurance organization’s business objectives, while elevating the standard for exceptional work through innovation, creativity and impact in the marketplace.


2021 IMCA Icon Award Winner
Mark Wells, executive chairman of Wells Media Group, Inc.
Wells recently celebrated 50 years in executive leadership at Insurance Journal. He expanded Insurance Journal nationally and was an early adopter of the web, email, social media, audio, and video content. His nomination credited him for creating an innovative and collaborative environment at Wells Media, where his associates feel valued and encouraged to contribute new ideas.

Nominee Eligibility & Requirements

  • Hold the title of chief marketing officer, vice president of marketing, senior marketing director, or equivalent for their current organization.
  • Have a minimum of two (2) years of experience in their current role.
  • Have a minimum of seven (7) years of experience within the insurance industry.

Judging Criteria

The judging criteria evaluate the nominees’ contributions to their current role, past roles, the industry, and their community and charity involvement. The below leadership descriptions will be used to score the nominees. 

Current Role: 

  • Demonstrated a transformation and improvement of marketing and communication efforts for their current organization
  • Responsible for game-changing outcomes and improved metrics
  • Inspires team to reach marketing and communications goals
  • Provides leadership in developing valuable content that positively impacts the customer experience and the client acquisition process
  • Creates an innovative environment that delivers break-through marketing and communications work

Past Insurance Communication and Marketing Roles:

  • Demonstrated a transformation and improvement of marketing and communication efforts for past organization(s)
  • Responsible for game-changing outcomes and improved metrics
  • Inspired team to reach marketing and communications goals
  • Provided leadership in developing valuable content that positively impacts the customer experience and the client acquisition process
  • Created an innovative environment that delivers break-through marketing and communications work

Insurance and Marketing Industry Contributions:

  • Recognition by peers in the field
  • Leadership roles held within industry networks or associations
  • Demonstrated industry thought leadership

Past Experiences Outside of Industry Contributions:

  • Notable marketing and communications experience and leadership outside of the insurance industry

Community & Charity Involvement:

  • Noteworthy community and charity involvement
  • Utilizing their marketing and communication skills to positively impact community or charity initiatives
